Call for Art Proposals: Guidelines for Applicants
2009.04.17

Setouchi International Art Festival 2010 will be an unique event.
For 100 days starting in July 2010, innovative works of art from around the world will inhabit seven small islands in the Seto Inland Sea, nestled between the three main islands of Japan.
From long ago the Seto Inland Sea has played an important role as a main artery of transportation. Boats came and went, mixing new cultures and lifestyles with the traditional customs of the islands.
Building upon the legacy of the Naoshima “art island” art houses, underground museum and Tadao Ando-designed hotel, the Setouchi International Art Festival offers an opportunity for people to experience the healing landscape of the Seto Inland Sea, its lifestyles and culture as an alternative context for the appreciation of contemporary art.
To join the roster of international artists selected by the Executive Committee, we are looking for art proposals from artists with a vision, one that makes use of the setting’s unique resources, reveals its charms, and invites exploration by its diverse group of visitors.
The Committee is seeking art proposals in four categories:
- Art House Project: Works using private or vacant houses
- Works that take terraced rice-fields or the island’s nature as their theme (mainly for Shodoshima)
- Alley Project: Works created mainly in the alleys of Ogijima
- Other: Open proposals
The specific sites for the art projects will be determined by the Administration Office, based on the plans proposed by the applicants.
