Yamagoe-do （Mountain Voice cavern）
Throughout much of the 20th century, Shodoshima's Konoura area was home to a quarry that shipped quality crushed stone to the Kyoto-Osaka-Kobe region. The quarry workers and the ship owners contracted to transport the stone prospered greatly from the enterprise's profits and made the tip of the Mito Peninsula a thriving community. When the rock crushing businesses pulled out, they left their worksites behind. Today, a silent forest has reclaimed the land. Meanwhile, the Mito Peninsula's population is declining at a rapid clip. Mountain Voice Cavern is a place that feels like it both traces the history of Konoura's people and serves as a symbol of nature's healing power.
