Born in Takamatsu, Kagawa in 1930. After dropping out of Musashino Art School (now Musashino Art University), Kawashima moved to the United States in 1963 and established himself in New York. He received international acclaim for his Red and Black series of symbolic paintings in 1965. In 2010, he formed Dream Friends in Kagawa and transferred his base from New York to his hometown in Takamatsu for Setouchi Triennale 2016.
