Kagawa Prefecture is home to five Living National Treasures in the art of Kagawa urushi , lacquerware that is a representative craft of this area. Distinctive features of Kagawa urushi are an abundant use of vividly colored lacquer and the carving of sensitive patterns. Techniques unique to this region include kinma, zonsei, and choshitsu. The exhibition captures these and other fascinating aspects of this traditional craft under the guidance of lacquerware artisan and Living National Treasure Yoshito Yamashita.
