Naoshima Onna Bunraku

Traditional Culture

Dance of the summer Breeze

The arts have long thrived on Naoshima, an island once under the direct control of the shogunate during the Edo Period. Naoshima Onna Bunraku is a form of puppetry typical of that legacy. Since 1948, only women have been permitted to manipulate the puppets. The puppetry school burned down once, but three women have revived it. The art was recognized as a prefectural intangible cultural property in 1955, and today it is preserved as a prefectural intangible folk culture property. The program includes two dances: "Kotobukishiki Ninin Sanbanso" and "Keisei awa no Narutojunreika no Dan".
