Instead of approaching Oshima intellectually, Konoike spent her time exploring the island to experience its natural environment. In the evenings, she spoke with residents in the visitors’ room. From this process emerged works that engage the island’s rough and powerful energy.
Stitching stories together Konoike drew on the personal stories of people she met on Oshima, including nurses and care takers, and traced these in embroidery to create a series of table mats. This is an Oshima-version of a project in Okunoto and Akita.
