Kasashima is a designated Historical Townscape Conservation District.
In a structure built by Shiwaku carpenters, the artist used the symmetry of the columns and beams, the straw tatami mats and furniture, as well as implements left behind, to develop an installation of real and virtual images. The space also includes a work made from stone quarried on Honjima, which once supplied stones for Osaka Castle, and a stainless steel ring that conjures up the image of planetary orbit. The spatial, scientific, and philosophical concepts of the artist, who hails from Europe, unfold within a traditional Japanese building.
