About Triennale Passport

Please advice period of validity for the Triennale Passport.
The passport is valid for all 3-Session of the Setouchi Triennal [Spring / Summer / Autumn] which cover a total of 108 days. Please note, however, the passport is not available for session outside, such as period between each session.
How can I get a Triennale Passport?
In Japan, Convenience stores, ticket agencies, etc. sell vouchers which you can then exchange for a Triennale Passport when you come to the Triennale.
What is the Triennale Passport?
The Triennale Passport gives you admission to almost every Triennale site for no extra charge. Without it, you must pay an admission fee to see most indoor artworks and art sites.
How do I use the Triennale Passport?
Show your Triennale Passport to the staff before entering each art site. They will stamp the number of the art site on your Passport. At outdoor sites that require no admission, you will find a stamp hanging from the signpost so that you can stamp your own Passport.
Can I see all the art works and sites with the Triennale Passport?
A few art works and sites require a separate fee. Please check the Tickets/Goods page of the Setouchi Triennale website for details.
How much would it cost if I didn’t buy a Triennale Passport and paid admission separately for each site?
It would cost you over 25,000 yen. Please see the Tickets/Goods page of the Setouchi Triennale website for details.
Is it cheaper to buy a Triennale Passport or to pay admission at each site?
If you are only going to visit a few sites on one island, it is cheaper to pay admission separately, but otherwise, the Passport is usually a better deal. The Passport also includes other advantages such as free parking up to two times at the Triennale parking lot near Takamatsu Port.
Can I buy the actual Passport?
Passports can only be bought directly when the Triennale is in session. They are sold at Triennale information centers on the islands and at the ports, as well as at each art work.
Can I get a refund on the Triennale Passport?
No, there are no refunds.
Is there a Passport for children?
Children 15 and under can receive a free Passport. Please ask at the Triennale information centers.
Do children have to have a Triennale Passport to enter each site?
No. Admission for children 15 and under is free so they do not need a Passport to enter. However, many children enjoy having their Passports stamped at each site.
Is there a discount for senior citizens or for people with disabilities?
No, there are no such discounts available.
I lost my Triennale Passport. Is it possible to have it re-issued?
No, we do not re-issue lost Passports.

About the Official Guidebook and Pamphlets

Do I need a Triennale Guidebook?
You can still enjoy the Triennale without one, but we recommend purchasing one as it contains a lot of extra information on the Triennale.
Where can I purchase a Triennale Guidebook?
At bookstores throughout Japan and online. Please contact the book sellers directly.
Do you have any free pamphlets?
We have free pamphlets that present an overview of the Triennale. You can find them at the different Triennale sites.
Can you send me some pamphlets?
Yes, if you are willing to pay for postage. Please contact us for details.
Is the Guidebook only in Japanese?
We have an English Guidebook as well, which can be purchased online or at Triennale shops and some bookstores.

Access to Takamatsu and Uno

How do I get to Takamatsu Port?
Takamatsu Port is in Takamatsu city, Kagawa prefecture. Takamatsu can be reached by plane or by train from major centers such as Tokyo and Osaka. There is also an overnight bus from Tokyo and other cities. Takamatsu Port is just a 5-minute walk from JR Takamatsu station. Takamatsu station can be reached by limousine bus from Takamatsu Airport (45 minutes).
How do I get to Uno Port?
Uno Port is in Tamano city, Okayama prefecture. Train is the best way to reach Uno. It’s about 1 hour from Okayama station on the Uno line. The port is about a 1-minute walk from Uno station.
Which is more convenient for accessing the art works and islands, Takamatsu Port or Uno Port?
Takamatsu Port has the most ferries and provides the easiest access to most of the islands, including Naoshima, Teshima, Megijima, Ogijima, and Shodoshima. From Uno Port, you can travel to Naoshima, Teshima and Shodoshima.
Are there parking lots near Takamatsu and Uno ports?
There are parking lots that require parking fees near both stations. With the Triennale Passport, you can park for free up to 2 times at the Triennale parking lot near Takamatsu Port.

About Ferries and High Speed Passenger Boats

Can I take my bicycle to the islands?
Yes, you can take your bicycle on the ferries for a fee. You cannot take your bicycle on high speed passenger boats or regular passenger boats.
What’s the difference between a ferry and a high speed passenger boat?
Ferries are large boats that can carry many people. High speed passenger boats travel much faster, but can carry fewer people, and in most cases, they are more expensive than ferries.
Are the boats crowded?
During the Setouchi Triennale, the boats can get very crowded so you should allow yourself plenty of time to buy tickets.
Can I make a reservation for a ferry or a high speed boat?
Some ferries take reservations. Please contact each ferry company to find out the details.
When does the ticket office open for ferries and high speed boats?
Usually about 30 minutes prior to departure.
Can I take my pet on the boat?
No pets are allowed on high speed passenger boats. Concerning ferries, please contact each ferry company to find out their policy.

About Transportation on the Islands

Do you set up the wheelchair at each location?
We set up the wheelchair which can be used to visitors at each information center and main office. Inquiry to main information center for detail. Tel: (+81) 87-813-2244
Where can I rent a bicycle?
There are rent-a-cycles on every island except Oshima, Inujima, Takamijima and Ibukijima. There are also some islands where traveling by bicycle is actually inconvenient, such as Ogijima, so please check before renting.
Can I get around the islands on foot?
The art sites on Megijima, Ogijima, Inujima, Oshima, Shamijima, Takamijima, Awashima and Ibukijima are all within walking distance. On Naoshima, Teshima, Shodoshima and Honjima we recommend combining walking with local island buses or rent-a-cycles.
Do you have a bus timetable for each island?
The bus timetables are in the Guidebook. When the Triennale is not in session, the schedules may be different, so please check with the local bus companies.
Are there taxis on the islands?
There are taxis on Naoshima, Teshima, and Shodoshima. Please note that the number of taxis on Naoshima and Teshima is very limited.
Can I take a baby buggy to the Triennale or rent one locally?
It is possible to take a baby buggy into most art sites, but please be aware that some sites are not level. We do not rent baby buggies.

About the 3-Day Triennale Ferry Pass

Where can I buy a 3-Day Ferry Pass?
You can buy a voucher for a 3-Day Ferry Pass at any convenience store or ticket agency. You will be given a Pass in exchange for the voucher when you reach the Triennale, so please be sure to bring your voucher with you.
Can I ask about the validity of the 3-Day Triennale Ferry Pass?
It is valid for consecutive three days from the day when you exchange for an actual ticket initially during the Setouchi Triennale. The pass can be used multiple times for ferry only during the Triennal. However, you can not use to spanning the period to session outside.
Should I buy a 3-Day Ferry Pass or just regular ferry tickets?
The 3-Day Ferry Pass can be used to travel to Naoshima, Teshima, Megijima, Ogijima and Shodoshima. If you will be visiting 2 to 3 of the above islands within a 3-day period, we recommend buying a Pass. Please note that you cannot use the Pass to take high speed passenger boats.
Can I use the 3-Day Ferry Pass to visit the islands in western Kagawa (Shamijima, Honjima, Takamijima, Awashima and Ibukijima)?
No, you cannot use the 3-Day Ferry Pass for the western islands.
Can I use the 3-Day Ferry Pass to take a high speed passenger boat?
No, you cannot.
Can I get a refund for the 3-Day Ferry Pass?
No, we do not give refunds even if the ferry is canceled due to bad weather, etc.
Do you offer discounts for senior citizens or people with disabilities for the 3-Day Ferry Pass?
No, we do not offer such discounts.
I lost my 3-Day Ferry Pass? Can you re-issue it?
No, we do not re-issue ferry passes.

About itinerary

How many art sites can I visit in one day?
In general you will need a whole day to see the art sites on one of the larger islands, such as Shodoshima or Naoshima. For the smaller islands, it take about half a day per island, and therefore it's possible to see two small islands in one day.
How long does it take to visit the art sites on all of the islands?
About one week.
Is it worth going for a short visit?
Yes, there is plenty to see and enjoy even if you can only go for one night and two days. Many ferries leave from Takamatsu Port and Uno Port, which make these the best bases for seeing more in a short time.

About Accommodation

Where is a convenient place to stay overnight?
Takamatsu is a very convenient place to stay as a base for visiting the islands. Accommodation is very crowded during the Triennale so please book in advance. Please contact each hotel or inn directly for information on room availability, etc.
Is there a hot spring nearby?
There are hot spring baths in Shodoshima, Takamatsu and Kotohira. Please contact the different hot spring facilities directly for more information.

About Naoshima, Teshima and Inujima

Can I get around these islands on foot?
You can get to all the art works on Inujima quite easily on foot, but as Naoshima and Teshima are quite big, it is better to combine walking with taking the local bus.
Can I take my car on the ferry?
You cannot take your car on the ferry to Inujima. You can take your car on some of the ferries to Naoshima and Teshima, but we do not recommend doing this because capacity is limited and also because the roads on these islands are very narrow and only meant for local traffic.
Is it possible to see the art sites in the summer holidays when it is crowded?
Facilities managed by Benesse Art Site Naoshima, such as the Chichu Art Museum and the Teshima Art Museum, issue numbered tickets when it is very crowded. Please get a numbered ticket and go to the facility when it is your turn.
Are the facilities closed at any time?
Facilities on Naoshima are usually closed on Mondays while those on Teshima and Inujima are usually closed on Tuesdays. These holidays sometimes change due to national holidays, etc. so please be sure to check in advance on the Benesse Art Site Naoshima website.
Are there restaurants on these islands?
Naoshima has many restaurants. Teshima and Inujima have only a few, and therefore they can become quite crowded during the busy season.
Is there a place to check my luggage?
There are lockers and places to check luggage near the ports. Please inquire at the ferry terminal on arrival.

About Megijima and Ogijima

Can I get around these islands on foot?
You can get to almost all the art sites on Megijima and Ogijima on foot.
Can I take my car on the ferry?
It is possible, but the roads on these islands are extremely narrow, so we do not recommend taking your car.
Are there any restaurants on the islands?
There are some restaurants on both Megijima and Ogijima, but they can become quite crowded during the busy seasons so allow yourself plenty of time.
Is there a place to check my luggage?
Yes. Please inquire at the ferry terminal on arrival.

About Shodoshima

What’s the best way to get around Shodoshima?
Shodoshima is a very big island so we recommend either renting a car or using the local island buses.
Can I take my car on the ferry?
Yes, you can. Please contact the ferry company you intend to use to find out how much it costs.
Are there restaurants on the island?
Shodoshima has many restaurants as well as supermarkets, retail shops and convenience stores.
Is there accommodation on the island?
Shodoshima has many hotels and inns. Please contact the hotels directly to inquire about vacancies, etc.
Are there other things to see besides the Triennale sites?
Shodoshima has many attractive sights to see, such as the Kankakei Gorge, Choshikei Monkey Land, Hishio no Sato (Home of Soy Sauce), and the Twenty-Four Eyes Movie Village. Contact the Shodoshima Tourism Association for details.

About Shamijima, Honjima, Takamijima, Awashima and Ibukijima

Can I get around these islands on foot?
Except for Honjima, all the art sites on these islands are accessible on foot. On Honjima, we recommend combining walking with use of the local bus.
Can I take my car on the ferry?
It’s possible to take your car to Honjima, but driving on the island is difficult due to the narrow roads. Shamijima is connected by a land bridge, but please do not drive your car into the village because you will interfere with local life. You cannot take your car on the ferries to Takamijima, Awashima or Ibukijima.

About Takamatsu

Are there restaurants near Takamatsu Port?
Yes, there are many restaurants and also convenience stores.
How far is the downtown area from the Port?
You can reach the Marugame-machi shopping district within 15 minutes on foot.
Can you recommend a good place to eat the local specialty Sanuki udon noodles?
There are many good udon shops in the Marugame-machi shopping district, around the port and in the city.
Where can I buy souvenirs?
The official Triennale shop near Takamatsu Port has a wide selection of souvenirs.

About Uno

Are there restaurants near Uno Port?
Yes, there are restaurants and convenience stores.
Where can I buy souvenirs?
The official Triennale shop near Uno Port has a wide selection of souvenirs.

About the photograph

Can I take photos of the art sites?
Yes, almost all of them can be freely photographed. However, if you intend to use any of your photos for commercial purposes, such as a book or magazine, please contact us via the press page of our website and submit a request for permission. Please also be considerate of the islanders when taking photographs.
Can I take photos by drone?
Please refrain from taking photos by “unmanned aircraft” such as Drone around each art site because it can occur some accidents by fall or obstruction of the visitors in duration of Setouchi Triennale. In addition, please refrain from taking photos of artworks by “unmanned aircraft” and also opening the taken photos on view to public such as on website.

Is it possible to loaning of image?
Loaning image is available in the Setouchi Executive Committee. The Application Form is located in of the Triennale official website. Please feel free to contact it and fill out the application form.
