Ascend the past and now, descend the future
This work uses Shodoshima's geographical features to take another look at the past, present and future. It layers an old postcard photo of Kankakei, one of Japan's three great gorges, with a photo of its present state to shake up our idea of "here" and "now." The artist has also produced a space covered by the silvery coast and flotsam, which resembles a blanket of snow, as an opportunity to rethink what happens "next." The piece uses the first two floors of an abandoned house to unite the three temporal phases.
