Islands and Venues

Uno Port Area

Base camp connecting Honshu to the Setouchi islands.

Uno Port is located in Tamano City on the southern tip of Okayama Prefecture. A port town blessed with the beauty of the Seto Inland Sea, it has a population of about 55,000.

Uno Port serves as the gateway from the main island of Honshu to other islands and developed as an important hub for maritime traffic on the Inland Sea. In addition to regular ferry piers, it has a large cruise ship berth which welcomes many cruise ships throughout the year.

The shopping district located near the port has cafes and accommodations in renovated heritage buildings, making it a relaxing place to stay.

Gateway to the Islands

The Uno-Okayama train line and the Uno-Takamatsu ferry line were established in 1910. Uno station was the starting point for the sleeper train to Tokyo, and Uno Port developed both as the city center and as a key port connecting Honshu and Shikoku. Although the Uno-Takamatsu ferry has been discontinued, the port remains a bustling gateway to many islands with regular ferry routes to Naoshima, Teshima, and Shodoshima.

Nature

The top of Mount Ojigatake, which lies within Setonaikai National Park, offers a magnificent view of the tranquil Seto Ohashi Bridge, the islands of the Seto Inland Sea including those participating in the Triennale, and the Shikoku Mountains. Miyama Park, which spreads along Route 30 in the city center, covers 200 ha which are planted with 150,000 trees and shrubs, including cherry and azalea. Many people come from near and far to shop at the park’s popular farmers’ market that sells fresh farm produce as well as marine products, baked goods, and other local products.

Industry

Tamano’s coastline stretches 44 km from east to west and has many inlets that formed natural harbors and made boat access easy. As a result, the area prospered. Core industries were shipbuilding, refining, and salt manufacturing, and the town still reflects its history as a shipbuilding center. Farming and fishing also flourish, and the area is known for its oranges, purple sweet potatoes, seaweed, and sea bream. In recent years, a major Japanese manufacturer established Japan's largest rechargeable battery factory in the city.
