"Stand Up!" Series/ Running Dog, Floating Elephant

With a plan inspired by the legend of a dog gravestone told on the Mito Peninsula and fossils of Naumann's elephant produced by the waters off the coast of Konoura, the artist has combined the "Stand Up!" series of dog sculptures with a giant sculpture of Naumann's elephant to produce the central element of this installation. A local fisherman once caught a Naumann's elephant bone from the bottom of the sea in his net. Like a call from the ancient past, it made him think of the creatures that once thrived in this region. The artist produced this work by combining this Naumann's elephant with the local "Legend of the Dog Gravestone." The dogs in the story are portrayed as loyal beasts, but when they stand, something of the Naumann's elephant resides in their form. The shape of the Naumann's elephant is one that is wild, fierce and unknown to us, and is no more than a forgotten, fragmentary memory that sleeps within the dogs and us.
