Guidelines for Applicants

  • [Contents]

    We are calling for site-specific art projects utilizing the local resources of each venue of the Setouchi Triennale 2025.

      【Work Proposals】
    1. Site-specific work
      Works that make the most of the Seto Inland Sea.Works with the theme of the island’s nature, history, local culture, or lifestyle.(Proposals can be indoor or outdoor)
    2. Site-specific performance or event
      Music, dance, or theatre performances during the exhibition period. (Artists/performers may be able to reside locally during the performance period)
    3. Works in line with the Policy for the Setouchi Triennale 2025. [The Policy for Setouchi Triennale 2025]

    4. 【Project Proposals】
    5. Project facilitating interaction and exchange
      Plans that facilitate interaction between residents, supporters, visitors and the artist.
    6. Food project
      Food-related projects that make use of local ingredients, introduce the island's unique food culture, and collaborate with local residents.
    7. Proposals for development of existing projects and plan management
      Target work examples: Shima Kitchen (Teshima Island), Ogijima Pavilion, ISLAND THEATRE MEGI, Megijima Meitengai Mall.

    9. Projects that promote local culture and challenge the concepts and means of expression of art festivals from a range of perspectives.

    Naoshima Island, Teshima Island, Megijima Island, Ogijima Island, Shodoshima Island, Oshima Island, Inujima Island, Shamijima Island, Honjima Island, Takamijima Island (including Tadotsu Town Hondori), Awashima Island, Ibukijima Island, Takamatsu Port, Uno Port, Sanuki City (Shido Town landscape, Ogushi Peninsula, Tsuda no Matsubara Pine Tree Park etc.), Higashikagawa City (Hiketa Town landscape etc.), Utazu Town (Utazu Town landscape etc.)
  • [Applicant Qualifications]

    Anyone that understands the objectives of the Setouchi Triennale.
    Anyone that can temporarily stay at the site and collaborate with local residents (if and when required as part of their project plan).

    *Selected applicants may be requested to stay on site in order to perform or manage their project during the Triennale period.
  • [Selected Proposals]

    About 5 to 10 works will be selected (subject to circumstances).
    Selected applicants will be paid for production costs amounting up to 2,500,000 yen.

    *The final budget will be decided based on the estimates and other data submitted by the applicant.
    *No costs other than the decided production fee will be paid to the applicant by the Setouchi Triennale Executive Committee, including transportation and accommodation fees.
    *The final allocation of any profits produced by the works must be decided upon in discussion with the Executive Committee.
    *The start-up costs of food and other projects should be discussed with the Executive Committee.
    *Islands of the Setouchi Triennale are designated as Setonaikai National Parks, so changes to project plans may be requested in accordance with the National Parks Act.

    To apply, please fill out the application form on the official website and attach documents according to the following guidelines.

      Please attach data of the following.
    1. Project Proposal: The following information must be included
      ○Project title / concept / description / production process / materials / size / production and installation schedule
      ○Estimated budget (for food projects and other projects that will create revenue, the income and expenditure plan should be submitted)
      ○Visual materials such as drawings, model photographs, illustrations, etc. to help visualize the final project

    2. Reference materials such as a curriculum vitae (CV) or example(s) of previous work
      *Descriptions of the concept and content of the project should be written in around 400 characters in Japanese or on half of an A4 sheet in English.

    3. Documents to confirm your application fee payment
      (1) Postal money transfer (a copy of the money transfer sheet)
      (2) PayPal (a copy of the completed payment screen)
  • [Submission Format]

    When printed, the documents from 1. and 2. mentioned above should fit on A4 size paper and be no more than 10 pages total.
    Documents should be in PDF, JPEG, or MP4 format and should be no more than 2 GB in size.
    The application must be submitted in Japanese or English.

    Number of submissions: No more than 3 proposed plans per person/group
    Artwork conditions: No limitations on size, materials, weight, etc.
    Site and environment conditions: In principle, the site must be returned to its original condition. In the case that the site serves some manner of functions, those functions must continue throughout the installation period.
    Display period conditions: In principle, the artwork should be able to remain in good condition for the entire exhibition period (206 days). (events and performances excluded)

    *Mail, e-mail, and in person applications will not be accepted. Screening will be conducted in order after the first round.

Screening, Application

    First Screening: By review of application documents
    Secondary Screening: By interview. There may be a site visit if necessary.

    *Those who pass the first screening will be notified directly by Executive Committee.
    *No inquiries on the screening results can be accepted, so please refrain from contacting us with such inquiries.
  • [Announcement of Screening Results]

    The participating artists for 2025 will be announced on the official website in March 2024.

    *Artists will not be individually notified of final results.
    *The names of the participating artists will be announced on the official website without mention of whether they were selected through open call or not.

    Amount: 1,100 yen(per proposal)

    October 12, 2023 (Thurs.), October 13, 2023 (Fri.) and October 14, 2023 (Sat.)
    For details and applications, please check the official website. *On-site tours have ended.

    *Going on on-site tours will not affect the screening. Applicants who do not go on on-site tours can still apply.
    *On-site tours will be held on 5 western islands from the Triennale venues (Shamijima Island, Honjima Island, Takamishima Island, Awashima Island, and Ibukijima Island) and 3 venues (Sanuki City, Higashikagawa City and Utazu Town).

  • Copyright and Royalty Information

    ◎The applicant will reserve the artistic copyright of the project proposal.
    ◎The Executive Committee will reserve the ownership of the work selected.
    ◎The plan drawings and visual images from the proposals may be used for purposes related to publicity and promotion of the Triennale, official publications, website, press releases, etc., when determined necessary by the office, with no royalty payment to the applicant.
