Setouchi Islands × Asia

In the midst of the trend towards globalization, countries in the Asian region are taking a keen interest in the Setouchi Triennale. Island Food × Culinary Artists

This project encourages artists to identify traditional foods from each island and add a contemporary twist. The dishes they create will let visitors experience the history and character of the islands and foster interactions with local people.

Multidisciplinary Performances

The ratio of theater, dance and other performances in the Triennale program is increasing. New projects are also planned for 2019, including a production by Dutch artist Christiaan Bastiaans featuring the world-renowned actress Liv Ullmann, as well as an acapella choir of several hundred members, mainly from Taiwan, which will perform on various islands.

Connecting People and Communities

Countless people are involved in every Triennale, and their efforts to infuse a new energy into each locality are taking concrete shape. They assist the artists to produce their works, man the reception desks at Triennale sites, provide food and hospitality, warmly welcome visitors at every port and on every island, and then send them off again. In addition, the initiatives below are being continued and expanded to ensure that the new approaches to revitalization endure and thrive.

  • Fram’s Setouchi School

Fram’s Setouchi School trains human resources in the skills needed to support the Triennale in a variety of ways, including art production and festival management, and to contribute to the revitalization of local communities. Sessions began in 2017, and participants will draw on the knowledge and experience they have acquired to support Triennale activities in 2019.

  • Inter-Island Networking

Residents of Triennale locations along with individuals and groups involved in supporting the Triennale will visit other islands to participate in successful projects and share experience and knowledge. This process will help establish inter-island support networks and promote revitalization projects in which local residents are the main protagonists.

  • Collaboration with Schools

The Triennale welcomes the participation of schools from primary all the way through university in various activities. This gives children and young people, who hold the future in their hands, precious opportunities to explore the issues confronting local communities today and to connect with the world.
