Beat Shrine / ANGER from the Bottom
The towering eight-meter sculpture emerges occasionally from a well. An allegorical work, it employs the image of a giant earth spirit hiding at the bottom of an old well on the island that comes out to frighten people. Beat Takeshi came up with the concept and plan, which was then created by Kenji Yanobe. Originally installed in one of the island’s old wells, local volunteers built a small ‘shrine’ for the sculpture in 2014 to preserve it into perpetuity. The shrine shrinks and grows together with the sculpture.
