Hiroshi Sugimoto

Artwork No. 010

Art House Project "Go'o Shrine"

Artist Hiroshi Sugimoto personally redesigned and restored the Go’o Shrine where people have worshipped since the Edo period. A subterranean stone chamber is linked to the main shrine with a glass staircase, introducing daylight into the darkness. The main shrine and hall of worship can be viewed at any time.

Art House Project
The Art House Project restores traditional Naoshima houses, temples and shrines and transforms them into art spaces. Located in a ‘living’ district, they are interwoven with memories of a time when these dwellings were homes. The project began in 1998, and seven buildings are currently open to the public.
